Great Concept4
This boombox/portable stereo unit is a great concept but should have carried through with all digital features.

The top loading, programmable cd/cdr/cdrw/mp3 player component holds only one disc at a time, which is fine, and has a digital readout for trac listing on the front panel. There are several cd controls on the control panel located above the lcd screen: play/pause, stop, skip backward, skip forward, program/p-mode and fold+/+10 (for mp3 files). It has a 20 track programmable cd memory and a 99 track programmable mp3 file memory. These features can be controlled with the included remote so you can change your mind from across the room, however, this is the ONLY function the remote will control.

It has a top loading, single, stereo cassette player/recorder that uses automatic recording level control (and one touch recording) so you can create compilations that allow all tracks to play at the same sound level whether they came from cds, mp3s, radio or all three combined. This component has all the cassette controls our retro boombox had, (record, play, fast forward, rewind, stop/eject and pause) each on it's own metal button right in front of the cassette compartment.

The AM/FM stereo radio is the least impressive component on this machine. It has the old school dial and, even with the telescopic antenna, the old school static hiss! You never get your station clean like you can with digital dial scales. If you're in a rural area (like me) this is HUGE once your satellite radio coverage goes 'behind the trees'! This is the biggest reason why it only gets a 4 star rating from me instead of five.

Now for the best feature: The Auxiliary Input Jack (located in the back of the machine, behind the speaker) allows you to connect and amplify iPods, (or other mp3 players), dvd players (3.5mm to rca cable required), or any other compatible audio device! This is the primary reason for my purchase! I can finally blast my less expensive iPod shuffle through two high performance speakers, and a high powered subwoofer with X-Bass Function (bass boost) and keep my iPod classic safely inside the house!

This mahine can run using the included AC cord or with 8 'D' size batteries (not included) so you can take it anywhere and never run out of tunes! It's pretty big at almost 18 pounds, 18" l x 14" d x 8" h (without the handle or antenna raised) but so is the sound so it's completely worth the extra, sturdy space it needs. While you can't adjust the sound balance (no equalizer) the way you can on a stereo or shelf system, the sound is still above average and the bass boost button makes it even better.

I would buy this again, and may give one as a gift this year, unless sony drops their "Xplod" to a more reasonable price! I'd have to hear one 'with my own ears' first of course! :)

Excellent Radio5
It is actually much bigger than I thought it would be and the sound is great!
